UMW Dahlgren Campus – providing educational leadership for the region

The UMW Dahlgren Campus Center for Education and Research opened in January 2012, and is designed to support the continuing educational and professional development of the region’s engineers, scientists, and administrative professionals by providing educational programs, services, and leased facilities to the Naval Support Activity South Potomac commands, defense contractors, and the professional community.

The two-story, 42,000 square foot, technologically sophisticated building includes 19 classrooms with seating for 12 to 32 students, four group study rooms with collaboration hardware and software, two quiet study rooms with individual workstations, two computer-enabled classrooms and a 16 seat computer lab, an executive conference room, and a 2,800 square foot divisible multi-purpose room with a warming kitchen and AV control room that will accommodate up to 220 guests seated theater-style and up to 160 guests seated banquet/meeting-style.  State-of-the-art instructional technology systems, video conferencing capabilities, and wired and wireless internet access are available throughout the building that will host educational programs and professional events.  It is also expected that the university’s presence will facilitate the establishment of a viable research presence and contribute to long-term regional economic growth and development.

The building is ADA-compliant and was recently certified as a Virginia Green Facility by the Department of Environmental Quality.  Designed to meet or exceed LEED Silver Certification requirements, the environmentally-friendly building features low-maintenance landscaping, designated car pool and low-emission vehicle parking spaces, a geo-thermal HVAC system, and a vegetative roof.
